Government in a mess Posts
Gordon Brown to join Susan Boyle at the Priory?
June 4th, 2009
For those of you reading this post from outside the UK, you may be totally unaware of the political turmoil taking place here. I don’t usually make political comments here as this is a business blog, but the paralysis in government is having a negative effect on all business as the focus has moved away from sorting out the economy to in-fighting and clinging to power by the Prime Minister and his team at the top.
The UK Labour Government looks like a drunk, staggering around the room, knocking over glasses and furniture, unable to speak coherently. With Brown’s own Cabinet in open mutiny – five resignations alone yesterday – it’s amazing to think that there is any control left in Government at all.
It all went wrong with MP’s expenses. I have been in business for quite a long time; having sometimes been at the sharp end of an aggressive accounts department demanding every last receipt before I was repaid my expenses. Most of us see that as normal. You supply a valid receipt for a business expense; they credit your account.
But MP’s have been able to claim a staggering amount without anyone raising an eyebrow – £75,000 for one MP to cut some trees at his Estate, late night pornographic movies for the husband of a senior minister and a claim for a £7000 flat screen TV for another…
Unbelievable.
In the midst of this, the Government, already weakened by poor leadership and direction has nose-dived into the mess as the media build on the frenzy.
Maybe Gordon Brown should go and join Susan Boyle at the Priory.
So we await the next few days. Will the Government collapse or not, who will go and who will stay? How about a General Election to change everything?
Just like George W Bush in his last year in power, Gordon Brown is powerless and increasingly seen as joke. Until strong leadership returns we will not see any improvement.
All businesses need direction and support, and most importantly – leadership.
Today happens to be a local and European parliament election day. I, for one, am off to vote!
